I was recently reminded that after misplacing my Tagalog copy of Beauty and the Beast and fearing it lost for good I found it in my fridge. (And after I found it I thought about it and couldn't think of ever opening my fridge with it in hand.)

On the hunt for style helpers

Hey! Those of you hanging around #dw probably know me already, but for those who don't, I'm one of the newer style writers/patchers. Now, my problem is as follows - I am very happy mucking around in code and writing patches and all that good stuff, but I am terrible at QA-type things. Like, embarrassingly terrible. I also have a smaller monitor than most, which means doing preview shots is difficult for me. And I would love to have people who are good at those sorts of things who'd like to help out with it, particularly as I'm going to try to get into some of the layouts in our bugzilla backlog (I just picked one up that's been there since 2010).

So! Your mission, should you choose to accept it:
-Play with style options and make sure they all work (or tell me 'Momiji, I just broke the layout with this option' if they don't)
-Play with the color settings, and make sure they color what they're labeled for (ie, 'entry links' shouldn't change the color of things on the sidebar)
-Take preview pictures!

Everything will be patched on my 'Hack, so it'll be just like using the customize settings on DW proper - no code knowledge necessary.

I've had a few people approach me over the past month or so regarding a few misunderstandings and missteps in irc, coming from several directions, so I thought it would be a good time to reiterate the Basic Operating Principles of #dreamwidth and ask for a renewed commitment to those principles. (If you don't visit irc, you can stop reading here! And participating in #dreamwidth is not a prerequisite for volunteering for Dreamwidth. This was just the closest official comm where I could put a post like this.)

I'm still trying to ramp back up my Dreamwidth volunteering activity level. In non-Dreamwidth news, I'm planning to attend the Perl QA Hackathon 2012 in Paris. Also, we had our first snowfalls of the winter late last week and this week, about 4-6 weeks later than we usually do.

What have you guys been up to, on or off Dreamwidth?

The code tour's a bit unwieldy (it's over a month of stuff, ugh; sorry for letting it get backed up!) so behind the cut are individual chunks of code tour needed, formatted for copy/paste and filling in, 4 sections of 15-ish bugs each. If you're interested in grabbing any one of the segments, comment to claim!

Looking for these by Friday night's code push, ideally. Any of 'em that aren't done by Friday afternoon, I'll get myself.

1) Code tour, 31 bugs, looking for it in a day or two.

2) As everyone and their siblings have noticed, I'm extremely behind on the biweekly (*hollow laugh*) news updates. There are many long, boring personal reasons, but the short of it is it's been a really bad few weeks, blah blah it bores even me.

The thought of trying to pull together said update even now is kind of like a giant albatross -- the things take me at least a full day's worth of work and I just don't have it in me right now -- so I would like to crowdsource (the lion's share of) the update. This will take away the major burden of finding things to put in the update, and also the struggle to word things!

If you've done anything on DW in the past six weeks (anything from the last update of 11 Aug to now), write a quick blurb (2-3 paragraphs) about what it is, how you did it, why you did it, why you think it'll be awesome for DW, etc. Even if you didn't complete it -- like, if you're working on a big major bug, etc -- write it up! Introduce yourself in a sentence or two, say what kind of stuff you do for DW, and then describe your project(s), etc. (For maximum interest, include a brief blurb at the end about how readers might get started doing the project themselves.)

I know people might be hesitant to do this (fearing that what they're working on won't be important enough, etc) but it is; I'm thinking of things like rb and hir starting in on dev work, people like rising and nornoriel about making themes, azurelunatic or someone from the antispeam team on spamwhacking, sophie on Dreamhack maintenance, kareila about Karzilla Smash!, etc. No matter how big or small you think the contribution is, somebody will find it interesting.

I'd really love to have 8-10 of these for the update; it will help me tremendously. (You seriously have no idea. It will be major.) And if there's someone who's done any DW work in the past six weeks and doesn't follow this comm, point them here!

Sections can be commented here, or messaged to my inbox. If you're going to write one, comment and let me know that you're planning on doing it. I'd love to have them by Friday night or so. Thanks so much, guys.

Social thread #10, Software Freedom Day

So it's been 6 weeks since the last social thread. What have you guys been up to?

Also, I just found out through http://wordpress.org/news/?p=2058 that this coming Saturday is Software Freedom Day, and that WordCamp Portland 2011 is making space available to developers from other open-source projects. Quoting from the blog entry:

Welcome Free Software Projects! Normally WordCamps are 100% focused on WordPress, but in light of Software Freedom Day, the WC PDX organizers, in conjunction with the WordPress Foundation, would like to extend an invitation to all free software projects to participate in WordCamp Portland. There are a couple of rooms set aside that can be used for unconference sessions and/or hacker rooms for other projects. It would be great to have local representatives from a bunch of projects there — almost a micro version of OS Bridge or OSCON — to maximize the free software love and cross-pollinate ideas. Developers from other projects are also welcome in the WP hackathon room if they’d like to pitch in. Saturday will also feature the Software Freedom Day Happy Hour at the end of sessions. For more information or to get your project involved, contact the event organizers via the WordCamp Portland website or email support at wordcamp dot org.

Looking for volunteers to look up embed urls on various sites

I'm looking for volunteers who are willing to dig into the various sites on the list in http://bugs.dwscoalition.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3707, and point me to the right direction of the proper format of the embed code for each site.

What I need:

* an example of the embed code, preferably a couple so I can compare. You'll probably want to put this into a <textarea rows=20 cols=40>(embed code here)</textarea< so you don't have to worry about escaping the code.

* I'm assuming that these are iframe embeds because those are what require whitelisting; embeds which use the <embed> tag don't need any special-casing.

* don't feel like you have to volunteer to get them all. It looks like some of these need an account before you can find the bits that are embeddable, so if you have an account on these services just the one or two would be very helpful!

* absolutely no rush :-)

As some of you know, Afuna and I have been wandering in the UK in late June and early July. I'm still working on a more complete account, but meanwhile I wanted to share a short highlight, viz my first (and mostly successful) attempt to get coffee from Starbucks.

Me: I'd like strongish coffee, about that much *points to empty cup Afuna was holding*, with some milk.

Starbucks: *spouts some highspeed Starbucksese at me*

Me: *pause* I'm sorry, I have no idea what you just said.

Starbucks: *brief pained grimace* "strongish coffee, about that much, with some milk".

So what have y'all been doing while I wasn't paying attention?

Writer needed?

I'm not sure how to ask this, but I really used to look forward to dw_news updates. If everyone is too busy coding to write them -- those epic updates probably took hours for poor denise! -- would this be an area that a volunteer writer could help with? Because I write professionally, and if I were given a topic or three I could probably turn them into a decent news post, even if it has to be on a monthly or biweekly basis.
